Italian superstar Alessandro Del Piero has thanked Sydney FC fans for a perfect first week in Australia.

Seven days after arriving in Sydney, Del Piero received a rapturous reception from around 2000 supporters at the club's fan day at their Allianz Stadium home base.

The 37-year-old Italian received his No.10 jersey from chairman Scott Barlow before spending around one hour signing autographs.

"I want to say thank you to all of you, my first week here was perfect," Del Piero told the fans in a brief interview.

"Very nice people and hopefully we will be able to win the title."

The former Juventus forward is set to play for the club for the first time in Wednesday's behind closed doors pre-season trial match against Central Coast Mariners at Allianz Stadium.

Del Piero said he hadn't yet fulfilled his promise to his oldest child to see some kangaroos, but they had seen some koalas.

Questioned about the prospect of lining up against a Newcastle side containing former England striker Emile Heskey, Del Piero generated more cheers by stressing he was more concerned with his own team.

Del Piero said training in his first week had been hard due to jet lag, but he expected to work better with each session.
