Caitlin Bassett dreamed of Australia holding aloft the world netball trophy but she never thought she'd be the one to score the winning goal.

The 23-year-old from Perth had only played five Tests before the Singapore tournament but will be a household name after her goal in the final seconds of extra time for a 58-57 victory over New Zealand.

With Australia trailing for much of the game, Bassett slotted two goals in the final minute to lift her side back level and then missed another in the dying seconds of regular time which would have given the Diamonds victory.

And then her winning goal.

She said she didn't know its importance at the time.

"I didn't even know it was the last goal, it was only when I heard the cheer," Bassett said.

"I wanted Australia to win but I never dreamed I would be the one out there."

Her skipper Natalie von Bertouch said it was an incredible effort given Bassett's inexperience.

"What an incredible job she did, the power and strength putting the balls through the hoop when they mattered.

"We couldn't have asked for anything more from a debutante."

Bassett was credited with shooting 100 per cent through five games in the official statistics at the championship, although she said she missed a goal before the final.

The 192cm player replaced Catherine Cox and her extra height gave the Australians a better target against the physical defence of Silver Ferns skipper Casey Williams.

Australia coach Norma Plummer had one word to describe Bassett: "Champion".
