Germany's Cedrik-Marcel Stebe saved his country's blushes with a straight-sets win over Argentina's Eduardo Schwank on Sunday to prevent a Davis Cup whitewash as the hosts suffered a 4-1 defeat.
On Saturday, Argentina had already booked their place in the quarter-finals, where they will face Croatia, but Stebe's 7-6 (7/1), 7-5 victory meant the Germans could at least finish with heads held high.
Argentina, last year's runners-up, had earlier taken a 4-0 lead on Sunday after Juan Ignacio Chela enjoyed a 7-5, 7-5 win over Florian Mayer.
