The Gold Cost Suns tried to ban Mad Monday, but that wasn’t enough – several Suns players have been involved in an end-of-season incident in Thailand.

Four players, Campbell Brown, Maverick Weller, Joel Wilkinson and Jacob Gillbee were arrested after an alleged fight with a local policeman.

The club had announced two weeks ago that it had banned Mad Monday, with coach Guy McKenna telling the media that the practice had passed its use-by-date in modern professional AFL.

”We’re a footy club, not a social club,” McKenna said at the time.

”It’s like the footy trips, these days I think they are a yesteryear thing about bonding. I think the best form of bonding is working hard together.

”It aint a sacrifice, it’s a choice. You choose to be a good person and a good footballer and you choose to work as hard as you can. It aint a sacrifice.”

The Suns players were attending a full moon party on the Thai island of Koh Phamgam.

Media outlets have suggested that the players were at a nightclub when an Australian man began arguing with them. The players left but then Weller was allegedly struck by this man, while another man who was a plain-clothes policeman, may have also been involved in the fracas.

The players retaliated, were then detained for two hours and handcuffed, but eventually released without charge.

The Gold Coast Suns have stated that they will look into the incident when the players arrive back in Australia this weekend.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that Thai authorities have dealt with the matter and no further action was necessary; however, the Gold Coast Suns have high expectations when it comes to player behaviour,” the club said in a statement.
