Several AFL stars have missed out on selection in the All-Australian team for 2011, with the likes of Steve Johnson and Josh Gibson missing the cut.
It was a youthful side named by the selectors, with nine debutants earing a spot in the 40-man squad.
The first-timers included Collingwood trio Travis Cloke, Dale Thomas and Ben Reid, as well as Bulldog Robert Murphy, Geelong’s James Kelly, Carlton’s Marc Murphy, North Melbourne’s Drew Petrie, St Kilda’s Stephen Milne and Hawthorn’s Sam Mitchell.
But it was the omission of several high-profile footballers that has raised some eyebrows. Cat Steve Johnson and Hawk Josh Gibson missed out, along with Saint Sam Fisher and Blue Heath Scotland.
Essendon players Jobe Watson and Michael Hurley were also overlooked, the same as Hawk Cyril Rioli and Swan Shane Mumford.
Collingwood and Geelong dominated the All-Australian team with six players named each, followed by West Coast with five and both Hawthorn and Carlton with four each.
Gold Coast Sun Gary Ablett was selected as the All-Australian captain, while Carlton’s Chris Judd was vice-captain.
Brisbane, Essendon, Port Adelaide and Melbourne were the only clubs with no players earning selection.
The panel of selectors for the squad is made up of AFL boss Andrew Demetriou football operations manager Adrian Anderson, Leigh Matthews, Mark Ricciuto, Kevin Bartlett, Luke Darcy, Danny Frawley and Glen Jakovich.
