In 1996, the AFL, as part of their centenary celebrations, named a ‘Team of the Century’ – a collection of players from the VFL/AFL’s 100 years.

While most of the big names were there, such as Whitten, Barassi, Bunton, Doull, the AFL selectors overlooked players from the SANFL, WAFL, TFL – the ones who helped make the AFL what it is today.

I have picked a ‘Team of the Ages’, which is named below:

B: Jack Reagan Steve Silvagni Matthew Scarlett
HB: Bruce Doull Ted Whitten Snr Kevin Murray
C: Francis Bourke Russell Ebert Peter Matera
HF: Gary Ablett Snr Wayne Carey Wayne Johnston
F: Ken Farmer Tony Lockett Leigh Matthews
R: Simon Madden Barrie Robran Barry Cable

INT: Stephen Michael, Jack Dyer, Haydn Bunton, Garry McIntosh.
EMERG: Graham Farmer, Neil Kerley, Dick Reynolds, Darrell Baldock.
COACH: Ron Barassi.
